iCARE Rapid Anti-HIV 1 and 2 Test

The iCARE Rapid Anti-HIV 1 and 2 Test is a rapid HIV antibody test that is used to check for the presence of HIV antibodies and free HIV-1 p24 antigen. It has been evaluated for its sensitivity and specificity for both HIV-1 antibodies and free HIV-1 p24 antiglycans. The test is available for use in clinics and medical laboratories worldwide.

Detection of HIV-1/2 Antibodies

The iCARE Rapid Anti-HIV 1 & 2 Test is a rapid screening test for HIV. It detects HIV-1/2 antibodies in oral swabs by chromatographic immunoassay. The test uses colloidal gold reagents labelled with specific HIV-1/2 antigens. Positive results show two distinct pink coloured bands. Negative results show only one pink coloured band, indicating the absence of HIV-1/2 antibodies.

HIV testing is critical for people who were infected in West Africa, or who have contact with people with links to the region. The rapid oral HIV test can detect HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies in three to six months after infection. In addition, the American Red Cross uses this test to screen people donating blood. The rapid tests are accurate and sensitive enough to detect antibodies in about 80 percent of people.

Detection of Free HIV-1 p24 Antigen

The iCARE Rapid Anti-HIV 1 and 2 Test detects free HIV-1 p24 polypeptide (p24) antigen. Its sensitivity is greater than other HIV antigen tests. The result can indicate HIV infection much earlier than with antibody-only tests.

The rapid HIV tests detect p24Ag in distinct variants. The RST detected 36/50 samples, while STAT-VIEW detected only 26/50 samples. The new 4G Alere HIV test detects HIV-1 p24 antigen in more than four times as many samples as the RST. It is more sensitive than the other RSTs and can detect six additional samples in addition to the ones tested. Additionally, the new 4G Alere test allows for detection of HIV-1 p24 antigen in more complex strains of HIV-1.
